Good morning and Happy Friday!  We have 2 more weeks of school left.  We will continue to do work in class, but there might be less homework beginning next week.  We have planned some exciting quiz bowls for the last week of school.  One of them will be the Sight Word Bowl with this year's sight words.  I have prepared a list and it is posted under Documents.  Please print and have your child read the words everyday.  They really want to do well and are very excited about the Sight Word Bowl.  We also have a Math Quiz Bowl.  It will be about addition and subtraction up to 20.

I hope that everyone has a great weekend.  We have our First Grade Mass on May 3.  The girs have to wear a light blue bow on their hair.  We are looking forward to seeing you on Friday.  
Our class' Field Day theme is Forky (Toy Story).  Mrs. Coleman would like one of the kids in our class to dress up as Forky.  If you are interested in volunteering your child, please let me know by Wednesday of next week.  Once I have the names of those interested, we will be picking one name randomly from a hat.  Please note that you will have to purchase a Forky costume for your child.  It is about $30 on Amazon.  All the children will have their Field Day shirts and bandannas.  They may also wear socks or accessories that match our Forky theme. No eye black and no tattooes. 
Some kids are in need of glue sticks.  Our class is also in need of tissues.  Please send in a box if you can.

Happy Friday!  Next Monday is our Easter Show.  It will be at 1:00 pm.  The kids can come to school in their costumes for their respective roles.  They will be performing for the school at 9am.  If you think that your child will have a hard time getting around and using the bathroom in their costume (if they are a disciple, angel, etc.), then they may bring an extra set of clothes for them to change into.  They can change back into their costume before the 1pm show.   Narrators or children who will be wearing Sunday Best do not need to bring in an extra set of clothes.
If you are signing your child and/or their siblings out after the show, please fill out the form that was sent home.

Catholic Schools Week is coming up on the last week of January.  First Grade's theme is "If I Were 100 Years Old".  The students have to dress up as a 100-year-old person.  We are giving you a heads-up so that you can prepare for this very fun event for the school.

Happy Friday! Thank you for your patience and understanding this week as we get back into routine after the Christmas Break.  We are going to resume tests next week.  One of the tests will be a Math Test on Chapter 9.  Please practice math subtraction facts up to 20 daily (e.g. 19-10 = 9, 18-6 =12, etc.)  We have learned a few different strategies in class, such as counting down, using a ten-frame, using a number line, etc.  The students will be able to use any startegy that they are comfortable with during the test.  They may even draw circles and cross some out to subtract.  The "Making-a-ten" strategy will not be part of the test.

We are in the middle of October and things in the classroom are going full swing.  Please continue to study daily, especially the spelling words, sight words, and sounds.  We do the same thing in class and I find that daily repetition really helps.  Another very important thing that you can do at home is to have your child read for at least 15 minutes per day.  We all know that reading is an essential skill and a very big part of all academic subjects.  Daily practice both in school and at home is needed to get the children comfortable with sounding out, blending words, and reading on their own.

In Math, we have just started subtraction.  Some of the children are still getting used to the concept of taking away instead of putting together (addition).  To help us accomplish our learning goal, please continue to do homework and practice subtraction problems for a few minutes each day.

  Please make sure that sweaters and sweatshirts have names on them.

The students have done a nice job with the tests.  Thank you for making sure that they are always prepared and for being consistent with completing homework.  I sent home the test folders today.  I could not send home the math test and today's reading test because some kids still have to take those tests.  I would also like to remind you that we have our tests first thing in the morning, so please have your child use the bathroom before leaving home.

We have MAP testing next week.  If you haven't sent in wired headphones, please do so by Monday.

Happy Friday! We had a very productive week in first grade, concluding with our first test today.  Thank you for studyung with your children.  I will send home the test folders home next week.   Please sign all tests and return them to school.  Just a few reminders:  Please have your child use the bathroom at home before coming to school.  Our first bathroom break is at 9am.  We also let them go as needed, but too many bathroom breaks causes a disruption in our schedule.  

I sent home our 2 Phonics book.  Please write your child's name and class on the cover.  You may cover them with contact paper, but it is not required.  Please send them back to school on Monday.

We will have 2 tests next Friday, 9/22:

- Please check your child's folder.  Fill out the emergency form and send it back in on Monday. 
- I sent home 2 books (My View and Math).  Please write your child's name and class on the front cover.  You may choose to cover your child's books with clear contact paper, but it is not mandatory.
- We start art class next Tuesday.  Please send in your child's art supplies in a separate case labeled "ART".
- Our specialty class schedule is as follows:
