Good morning Grade 1-1 Students and Families,
Happy Friday! Tomorrow is the first grade Promise Mass at the OLSS Church. Please arrive by 5:15 pm. The children have medallions that say “I am important to God.” Please have your child wear this tomorrow. If your child was absent today, please see me right before the mass. I will have their medallions.
Thank you for your continued diligence in making sure your child completes their homework and studies for the tests. I would also like to request that you have your child read every night. It really helps their confidence and comfort level when they take the reading tests.

Math Quiz - It will be on addition. Even though we are learning some new strategies, such as making-a-ten and doubles-plus-one, the children will be able to use whatever strategy they are comfortable with (including counting on and drawing circles). To study for this test, please refer to your Math book pages 293 - 294.

Spelling Quiz - boil, coin, join, soil, spoil, boy, joy, toy, been, going
Reading Comprehension Test - comprehension test only. The children will read a short selection and answer comprehension questions.

First Grade Promise Mass. Please arrive at church by 5:15 pm.
Some subject-specific reminders:
Reading - We have continued small group work for reading. The children should be reading everyday at home, even if it is for 15 minutes. There are some stories/ decodable readers in My View that you can use for reading. The Science, Social Studies, and Religion notes that we send home before each test also make good materials for reading practice. Practicing the sight words daily will also help with reading fluently.
Math - Please review the doubles facts up to 10 and making a ten (e.g. 7 + 3 = 10, 9 +1 = 10, 4 + 6 = 10, etc.) We are also reviewing adding to a ten (10 + 3 = 13, 10 + 9 = 19, 10 + 7 = 17, etc.). These are very important skills that the children need to have in order for them to be able to do mental math. We will continue to work on it at school. Please do so at home, as well.

Happy Friday! This week was a special fun-filled week in Class 1-1. Yesterday, we looked for clues which led us to the leprechaun’s pot of gold. Today, we designed and made musical instruments. The kids truly enjoyed making them. Thank you for your support and for sending in the materials.
I sent home the old My Views (1.1, 1.2, and 1.3). You may keep those at home or dispose of them. I also sent home the test folders which has all of the recent tests except for today’s Reading Test.

***For this Friday's math test, the children will look at a model and be able to write how many tens and ones and write what number it shows. This part of the test is very similar to page 229 of the Math book. so you may refer to that page.
The children should also be able to write the value of a given number of tens or ones. For example:
3 tens = _________
7 ones = __________
1 ten = _________
6 tens 4 ones = _________
2 tens 3 ones = ________
Finally, they should be able to tell how many tens and ones are in any 2-digit number. For example:

Reading Test - sight words are any, every, pull, very, were. Sounds will be the sound of "er", "ir", and "ur" (e.g. fern, girl, turn). I will continue to send home My View each day and tell you the pages that you can study at home.
I kindly ask that you practice the sight words for the week everyday. For some children, the time that we spend learning sight words in school is not enough as they need a lot of extra practice and repetition.
Math Test - The test will be on Place Value. The students have to look at a model and tell how many tens and ones, and then write what the number is. We will be reviewing how to do this next week.

Happy Friday! We have finished yet another week in Grade 1-1. We are on the home stretch! We are on our last My View workbook. Just a few more weeks left of reading and writing practice. In Math, we have finished our chapter on Data and Graphical Displays (tally charts, picture graphs). We will be having a test next Wednesday. I am sending the math book everyday until then so that you can study with your child. We will begin working on Geometry next week. In Science, we are working on many hands-on investigations about Plants.
You all have done such a great job with the homework this year. Please keep it up for just a few more weeks as we prepare for second grade. This is also the last quarter, and we want to keep our homework grade up.

Good morning Grade 1-1 Families,
Happy Friday! I can't believe it is already May next week. There are a few more weeks left to make sure our kids are ready for second grade. Please continue to read at home. We are also engaging in A LOT of reading at school. The students are doing an amazing job independently reading the reading comprehension tests. We are continuing to practice strategies, such as referring back to the text, underlining important information, and rereading to clarify information. Today's reading comprehension test was read entirely by the students, so their score on this test reflects their level more accurately.

Reading comprehension test tomorrow. The questions for this test are straightforward and are more like recall questions, such as "What was the story about?" If you would like to practice, I suggest reading a short simple story, such as one of our past Decodable Readers and asking your child questions after reading. They can go back to the story to look for the answers to the questions.
Thank you for sending in headphones. I collected some of them but I wanted to make sure you were okay with keeping them in school. We will be using them 2-3 times per week and it would help a lot if we already had them ready to go.

Good morning and Happy Friday! Thank you for continuing to read with your child. We are learning some new and challenging phonics patterns and it really helps to keep our reading muscles strong. I sent home the test folders home today, but I could not send home the Reading tests yet since I have some students who still need to take the test on Monday.

Valentine’s Day Dress Down - $5 per child, $15 per family
Happy Valentine’s Day. The students may bring in Valentines or goody bags for their classmates. If you choose to send in goody bags, please just write who it’s from. That way, it will be easier for us to give them out. Please also bring in a bag for your child to put their Valentines in.

Our new class page has been up and running for more than a week now. I understand some parents were having a hard time accessing it. Please let me know if you continue to have trouble. Please practice reading "A Dog and Her Bone". For this Friday's Reading Test, I will not be reading them the story and the comprehension questions. I will be reading the rest of the test that has the phonics and high frequency words there, down, drink, now, and together. For the phonics part, please review the long i sound and long e sound that the letter y makes. For example, the children will be asked "Which word has the long i sound you hear in the word cry?" Then they will have to pick from happy, shy, hurry. I have attached 2 worksheets (Spelling Practice, Sounds of y) under the Documents that will help your child study for the Phonics part of the Reading test, as well as the Spelling quiz. We are also doing these in school, but please feel free to do them at home this week for extra practice.
*Tomorrow is Dress like a 100-Year-Old Day. If your child choose not to dress up according to the theme, they may wear their school uniform.

Homework:
In your journal, write your answer to the question "How can you be Jesus' friend and follower?" Please write at least 2 sentences, more if possible. Draw a picture to go with what you wrote.
*Tomorrow is School Spirit Dress Down Day. We will be watching "Soul" in the afternoon. The Parent Association is providing pretzels as a movie snack. Please bring in an extra drink for the movie.

Tomorrow is Crazy Hair, Hat, and/ or Sock Day (dress down).
